How to Choose Windows for Your Home

HomeBlogUncategorizedHow to Choose Windows for Your Home

There are quite a few considerations before you choose windows for your home. And before we go deeper into that, let us just say that it makes a difference if you are trying to find replacement windows or windows for a new construction. Why?

Because in a new home, you need to decide about the size of the windows, which walls will have windows, which types of windows you need in each space, and all that stuff.

In the existing home, where the main concern is to change out the old windows with new ones, you don’t usually worry about the size or even the style – unless you are in the process of a complete home renovation and you opt for big changes.

Here we lay out the main things you should consider before you select windows. And also, the main considerations so that you will avoid mistakes today that will lead to some problems tomorrow. So, if it’s time for window shopping, let’s get started.

Choose the right window style

window style To achieve a cohesive appearance, you need to choose the same window style all around the house. With that said, the window style must match the home’s architecture. Even an old home can look great with new windows of the same style. If you are looking for replacement windows, you most likely want to replace windows that have been there since the construction of the house. So, you may want to get the same style and size.

Choose windows by style without forgetting function

The window styles are plenty with the most dominant ones being the single/double hung windows, casement windows, sliding and awning windows, etc. The question is whether or not the window can open with ease, especially if this is a double casement window.

That becomes a consideration when there used to be another window style on that spot. Or, when you renovate the house and although the old casement window could open; now, there’s not enough space.

And then, there are some safety considerations, especially if there are children in the house or perhaps, people with Alzheimer’s. In some cases, getting double hung windows – for instance, may no longer be a safe choice and you may opt for an awning window style.

Focus on the window’s frame

The material of the window’s frame is important for three reasons: security, longevity, and maintenance.

•   Security concerns are raised when the frame is made of a poor-quality material that can easily bend and break. The material must be sturdy, the window must lock and the window installation must be flawless.

•   For a long-lasting window frame, it’s best to invest in aluminum. Vinyl is strong too. Wood will also last for a long time but not as long as aluminum.

•   Aluminum is very resistant to the elements as opposed to wood, which needs more maintenance. Vinyl also needs limited maintenance.

Consider the direction of the home

window styleThe direction of your home plays a role in choosing the correct glass panel for your windows. The sides of the house most exposed to the elements should have at least double-glazed windows, insulated. Of course, it’s preferable to get insulated glass for all windows in the house – greater energy savings, but especially for those parts of the house that are directly exposed to the winds and cold drafts.

Choose the best window installers

Getting the right window style, glass, and frame is vital. But choosing experienced window installers is of equal importance. The whole point is to combine function and form, function and appearance. You need windows that will make a statement but also windows that will make your house comfortable – perhaps, reduce your energy bills. And all such things are accomplished when you combine the two: excellent windows, excellent window installation service.

After all, a company with experience in window replacement services will also help you choose the best windows for your home. That’s an extra plus.
